I was always frightened about getting stuck near Duque de Caxias when I lived in Rio state (between Angra and Paraty) in the early 1980s. One Sunday I was driving back home from Rio when a cloudburst hit--it came and went quickly, but I was stuck with my little VW Brasília surrounded by water almost to the floorboards. I knew people would come soon to rob me if I didn't get out of there. A bus drove by and I floored it, stuck on the bus's bumper with the wake like a boat on the sides. When I made it out of the flooded area I passed the bus, and a bunch of guys leaned out the windows hooting and applauding. That was good, since so often when they saw a blonde female driving alone they yelled, "Motorista de fogão!" ("You should be driving a stove!)
